Indian equity markets opened on a cautious note on Thursday, tracking sharp overnight losses in US markets. Investors remained wary as profit booking continued in high-valuation technology and artificial intelligence (AI) stocks globally.
The Nifty 50 opened at 25,772.70, down 45.85 points or 0.18%, while the BSE Sensex slipped 41.32 points or 0.05% to start at 84,518.33.
Weak global cues kept investor sentiment subdued. US markets extended their losses overnight as investors booked profits in tech and AI-related stocks that had earlier seen strong rallies. This global sell-off spilled over into Asian markets, including India.
The cautious tone was also visible in broader indices. On the NSE, the Nifty 100 fell 0.15%, Nifty Midcap 100 slipped 0.10%, and Nifty Smallcap 100 declined 0.13%, indicating widespread selling pressure.
Despite weakness across most sectors, Nifty IT stood out, rising over 1%. In contrast, other sectoral indices remained under pressure. Nifty Auto dropped more than 1%, Nifty Pharma fell 0.66%, Nifty FMCG slipped 0.11%, Nifty Media declined 0.41%, and Nifty Realty lost 0.53%.

Global markets stayed under pressure amid concerns over AI capital expenditure, possible funding pullbacks in data centre investments, and a shift towards defensive sectors. Other Asian markets also opened weak, following the subdued trend on Wall Street.
Indian markets opened lower due to weak global cues and selling in US tech stocks, but Nifty IT showed resilience by gaining 1%. Near-term market direction will depend on global trends and whether key support levels hold.
