The scheduled board meeting of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) on January 17, 2026, intended to approve the appointment of Neville Tata as trustee, was cancelled due to absence of quorum, as per PTI report. This marks the second delay in confirming his role at the trust associated with Tata Sons.
The meeting to induct Neville Tata, son of Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata, onto the SRTT board was cancelled because not all trustees could attend, a necessary requirement for trustee appointments. Discussions are ongoing among existing trustees to reach consensus, and the meeting may be rescheduled soon.
SRTT holds a 23.6% stake in Tata Sons, the promoter entity of the $180 billion Tata Group. The trust currently has 5 trustees: Noel Tata, Venu Srinivasan, Vijay Singh, Jimmy N Tata, Jehangir HC Jehangir, and Darius Khambata.
This is not the first time Neville Tata’s appointment has faced hurdles. An earlier attempt in November 2025, alongside Bhaskar Bhat, was also unsuccessful.
Although both were appointed to the Sri Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT), which holds a 28% stake in Tata Sons, they were not confirmed at SRTT due to internal objections.

Recent amendments to the Maharashtra Public Trusts Act by the state government in September 2025 now limit lifetime trustee appointments to 25% of the board and impose term limits where trust deeds are silent.
This has led to re-evaluations within Tata trusts, including a review of Venu Srinivasan’s previously unanimous lifetime appointment in October 2025.
While SRTT owns 23.6% of Tata Sons, SDTT holds 28%, and other affiliated Tata trusts collectively own an additional 13.8%.
These trusts play a crucial role in the governance and decision-making of Tata Sons, making trustee appointments significant for corporate strategy and stewardship.
The board meeting intended to formalise Neville Tata's appointment as SRTT trustee stands cancelled due to lack of quorum. Trustee consensus and adherence to new regulatory guidelines remain key factors in shaping the trust’s composition.
