OpenAI is in discussions with Amazon regarding a potential investment that could exceed $10 billion, according to Reuters reports.
The talks are private and the terms are not final. The Information first reported the discussions, which were later confirmed by Reuters. No agreement has been announced so far.
As per report, the investment could value OpenAI at more than $500 billion. Amazon’s proposed investment is estimated at around $10 billion, though the size and structure of the deal may change.
In October, OpenAI completed a $6.6 billion secondary share sale, allowing employees and former staff to sell shares at a valuation close to $500 billion.
The discussions follow OpenAI’s restructuring completed in October. This altered its long-standing arrangement with Microsoft. Microsoft has invested over $13 billion in OpenAI since 2019 and holds a 27% stake.
Under the revised structure, Microsoft no longer has the right of first refusal to act as OpenAI’s sole provider of computing capacity.
Access to computing infrastructure is central to the talks. Amazon Web Services has been developing its own artificial intelligence chips since around 2015.
It launched Inferentia chips in 2018 and announced a new version of its Trainium chips earlier this month. OpenAI may use Trainium chips, which compete with offerings from Nvidia and Google.
OpenAI has committed more than $1.4 trillion to infrastructure in recent months, according to disclosures. These commitments include agreements with Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, and Broadcom.
In November, OpenAI signed a $38 billion agreement to purchase cloud capacity from Amazon, marking its first major cloud contract with the company.
Amazon has already invested at least $8 billion in Anthropic, a rival to OpenAI. Microsoft said last month it would invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, while Nvidia plans to invest up to $10 billion.
OpenAI has also signed several multi-billion-dollar deals this year with companies including Nvidia and Oracle.

The discussions bring out the scale of funding and computing resources required by leading AI developers, as major technology firms continue to expand their involvement in the sector.
