India’s digital payments system may soon become much simpler for shopkeepers and small businesses. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is reportedly working on a new interoperable soundbox platform that could allow merchants to use just one soundbox for all UPI payment apps.

If implemented, the move could eliminate the need for multiple soundboxes and QR codes from companies like PhonePe, Paytm, Google Pay, and BharatPe.

One Device Could Handle Every UPI Payment

Right now, many merchants use separate soundboxes linked to different payment apps. For example, one device may be connected to PhonePe while another is linked to Paytm or BharatPe.

NPCI’s new plan could change that completely.

Under the proposed system, merchants may only need one soundbox to receive payment alerts from all UPI apps. No matter which app customers use to pay, the same device would announce the transaction confirmation.

The move could help shopkeepers save money, as merchants currently spend around ₹100–₹150 per month for each soundbox subscription.

Why is This A Big Deal for Payment Companies?

Soundboxes have become one of the biggest tools for payment companies to attract and retain merchants. Companies earn subscription revenue from these devices while also strengthening customer loyalty.

If NPCI standardises soundboxes across platforms, that advantage may reduce significantly.

The development also comes at a time when fintech firms are demanding the return of Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on UPI transactions. Many payment startups argue that there are limited ways to make money in the current zero-MDR UPI ecosystem.

Conclusion

NPCI’s interoperable soundbox project could become a game-changing update for India’s digital payments market. For merchants, it may mean lower costs and less hardware clutter. But for UPI companies, it could disrupt an important revenue stream and intensify competition in India’s booming fintech sector.
