National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the withdrawal of the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) requirement for cars under the Car/Jeep/Van FASTag category. This decision aim to improve commuter convenience and ending post-activation hassles for highway users. The change will apply to all new FASTag issuances starting February 1, 2026.
The decision is expected to provide substantial relief to millions of private vehicle owners who previously faced delays and repeated follow-ups after FASTag activation, despite submitting valid vehicle documents at the time of purchase.
For FASTags already issued to cars, KYV will no longer be enforced as a standard requirement. The verification process will now be triggered only in exceptional circumstances, such as complaints related to incorrectly issued FASTags, loose tags, or suspected misuse. In the absence of such complaints, existing car FASTags will not be subject to KYV checks.
While easing requirements for users, NHAI has simultaneously tightened pre-activation verification norms to safeguard system integrity and ensure compliance. Issuer Banks will now be required to complete all vehicle validation checks before activating FASTags.
By shifting the entire responsibility for vehicle verification to the pre-activation stage, NHAI aims to eliminate the need for post-issuance follow-ups and reduce customer grievances.

These reforms highlight NHAI’s commitment to building a more user-centric, transparent, and technology-driven FASTag ecosystem. At the same time, the strengthened upfront checks are designed to enhance compliance and improve the overall efficiency of electronic toll collection on national highways.
