India’s rooftop solar programme has crossed a major benchmark, with over 1.67 million households now producing clean power under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Introduced nationwide in February 2024, the scheme aims to transform the energy footprint of India’s residential sector, cutting reliance on conventional electricity sources and accelerating the shift to renewable power.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for New & Renewable Energy and Power Shripad Yesso Naik reported that as of 5 August 2025, 16.78 lakh households had benefitted from rooftop solar installations under the scheme. "A total of 16.78 lakh no. of households have benefited with rooftop solar installations under the scheme as on 05.08.2025, and the amount of ₹9,280.88 crore has been disbursed as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to the beneficiaries," he said.
The scheme, part of the Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Programme Phase‑II, launched in March 2019 and extended until March 2026, continues to receive significant funding support from the Centre.
Backed by a goal to reach rooftop solar installations in 1 crore households by 2026‑27, the initiative is central to India’s renewable energy ambitions. Beyond financial aid, it promotes energy independence, reduces household electricity bills, and cuts emissions, all while tapping India’s vast rooftop potential to drive growth in the decentralised energy sector.
