Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said India expects to increase its energy trade with the United States in the coming years. He noted that U.S. involvement will form a major part of India’s energy security plans, helping diversify supply and bring more stability.
The minister made these remarks in New York on September 23, 2025, at a conference on energy security. The event was organised by the Consulate General of India, the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), and ReNew. Goyal said India already imports energy from the U.S. and that this trade is likely to grow further.
India plans to expand its renewable energy capacity from the current 250 gigawatts to 500 gigawatts over the next 5 years. Goyal also said nuclear energy will be a larger part of the mix, with the government working to double nuclear capacity.
Private sector participation in nuclear projects is being supported.
Goyal underlined the need to strengthen supply chains for critical minerals and increase investment in power transmission networks. He said regulatory frameworks should allow energy trade to continue without being disrupted by geopolitical issues.
On the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), Goyal said the measure could raise costs and reduce competitiveness for European exports. He added that such policies risk isolating the EU from other trading partners.
The comments came as Indian officials, including Goyal and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, were in New York for talks with their U.S. counterparts. Goyal said both countries are working toward an early conclusion of a trade agreement, with energy cooperation a key part of the discussions.

India is focusing on expanding renewable and nuclear capacity, building stronger supply chains, and securing long-term energy partnerships. The United States is expected to remain central to these efforts.
