Artificial Intelligence has been identified as a critical driver of India’s growth under the Viksit Bharat vision. The latest NITI Aayog report outlines how AI adoption can reshape India’s economy, unlock massive potential across industries, and help bridge the growth gap by 2035.
According to the NITI Aayog report, Artificial Intelligence can contribute up to $1.9 trillion to India’s GDP by 2035. If adopted at scale, AI can enable India’s economy to reach $8.3 trillion with 8% growth, compared to $6.6 trillion at the current pace. The report highlights that AI alone could account for 30% to 35% of the country’s growth gap in the coming decade.
Globally, AI adoption is expected to create between $17 trillion and $26 trillion in value over the next decade. India has the capability to capture 10% to 15% of this value by leveraging its strong base of STEM talent and expanding the R&D ecosystem. This positions the country as one of the key beneficiaries of the global AI wave.
AI is projected to transform multiple sectors in India. Banking, manufacturing, and research-intensive industries such as pharmaceuticals, electric vehicles, and aerospace are expected to see the most significant impact. Generative AI in particular could help lower billion-dollar entry barriers, reduce R&D costs, and accelerate innovation in areas including semiconductors, biopharma, auto components, and SpaceTech.
The IndiaAI Mission, backed by a budget exceeding ₹10,000 crore, is at the centre of this transformation. The initiative includes deploying 38,000 GPUs, developing India-specific large language models, and setting up AI labs across Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. This is designed to create the necessary infrastructure for AI adoption and innovation at scale.
While the opportunities are vast, the report also outlines challenges that must be addressed. MSMEs face constraints related to infrastructure and access to quality data. Shortages of specialised talent in robotics, chip design, and battery technology may slow momentum. Moreover, creating a framework for consent-based data sharing and reskilling the workforce will be crucial as AI is expected to reshape 35% to 40% of jobs globally.

The report calls for urgent collaboration between government, industry, and academia to maximise AI’s potential. By ensuring inclusive and sustainable growth, India could become the “data capital of the world” and a hub for frontier technologies. This collective effort is seen as key to positioning India as a leader in the AI-driven global economy.
