NSE IPO could be among India’s largest ever, with a ₹4.7–5 lakh crore valuation. Here’s what it means for market cap rankings and investors.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) is moving closer to its much-anticipated initial public offering, with the exchange reportedly appointing 20 merchant bankers to manage the issue. According to sources, existing shareholders may offload a 4.5–5% stake through an offer for sale (OFS), potentially raising ₹21,000–25,000 crore.

If achieved, this would place the NSE IPO among the largest ever in India, alongside listings such as Hyundai Motor India (₹27,858.75 crore) and LIC (₹20,557.23 crore).

At current unlisted market prices, NSE is valued at around ₹4.70–5 lakh crore, positioning it within striking distance of India’s most valuable listed companies.

Valuation Could Place NSE Among Top 10 Firms

The current market capitalisation threshold for India’s top 15 companies stands at approximately ₹3.77 lakh crore, while the top tier stretches to ₹18.87 lakh crore. At its implied valuation, NSE could comfortably enter this elite group upon listing.

Some estimates suggest an even higher valuation of ₹6–7 lakh crore, implying a premium of nearly 40% over current unlisted prices. If realised, this could push NSE into the top 10 most-valued companies in India.

However, final positioning will depend on IPO pricing and listing-day performance, which remain sensitive to broader market conditions.

Strong Market Leadership Supports Investor Interest

NSE continues to dominate India’s trading ecosystem. It holds a 93% market share in the cash segment and a 57% share in the futures and options segment as of early 2026. Globally, it ranked as the largest derivatives exchange by contracts traded, with a 50.6% share in equity F&O in 2025.

Retail demand for NSE’s unlisted shares remains strong, with prices currently in the ₹1,900–1,925 range.

That said, the exchange reported a 22% decline in profit after tax to ₹7,431 crore for the first nine months of FY26, alongside a 10% drop in total income, reflecting some pressure on earnings.

Conclusion

The NSE IPO has the potential to reshape India’s primary market landscape, both in scale and valuation. While its dominant market position and strong investor interest support a blockbuster listing, valuation expectations and market sentiment will ultimately determine whether it enters the top tier of listed giants.

For investors, this could be one of the most significant listings in recent years—assuming, of course, the market doesn’t decide to be dramatic again at the worst possible moment.
