SpiceJet has announced a major expansion of its winter schedule, planning to launch up to 100 additional daily flights. This move comes at a time when IndiGo is facing disruptions and has had its flight slots reduced by the DGCA. According to the airline, demand across key domestic routes is strong, and the new flights will help improve connectivity for passengers.
To handle the increased winter traffic, SpiceJet has added 17 aircraft to its active fleet over the past 2 months. These planes were brought in through a mix of damp-leased aircraft and the reactivation of its own grounded planes. The larger fleet will give SpiceJet more flexibility in operations and allow it to serve high-demand routes more efficiently.
SpiceJet said the new flights will be focused on key routes with high passenger traffic during the winter season. The airline aims to maximise aircraft utilisation and strengthen its network by planning operations more effectively. All additional flights will be rolled out after receiving the required approvals from regulators.
The expansion comes on the back of operational challenges at IndiGo, which recently struggled with widespread flight disruptions. Government officials have said operations are slowly returning to normal.
The DGCA has ordered a 10% reduction in IndiGo’s winter schedule, which is expected to free up around 110 flight slots for other airlines. This has opened a window for competitors like SpiceJet to capture more market share during the busy travel season.
SpiceJet share price is trading at ₹33.91, up 0.09% as of 11 December, 10:47 am IST. The stock opened at ₹34.30 and has moved between a high of ₹34.60 and a low of ₹33.65 during the session. The airline has a market capitalisation of ₹4,790 crore, and its P/E ratio is currently not applicable as the company is not posting profits. SpiceJet’s 52-week range shows a high of ₹61.99 and a low of ₹28.13. The company does not offer any dividend payout at present.
SpiceJet’s decision to add 100 daily flights and expand its fleet comes at a crucial moment for India’s aviation sector. With IndiGo dealing with operational issues, SpiceJet is using the opportunity to strengthen its presence on major routes. For travellers, this means better connectivity, more flight options, and improved availability during the busy winter season.
