Airbnb has emerged as a powerful driver of India’s tourism economy, with fresh data showing its growing role in job creation and spending across sectors. According to the Economic Impact of Airbnb in India (May 2025) report by Oxford Economics, the platform supported 1.11 lakh jobs in 2024 and contributed around ₹2,400 crore in wages, while guest spending reached ₹11,200 crore.
The report highlighted that 91% of Airbnb’s Indian bookings in 2024 came from domestic travellers, up sharply from 79% in 2019. This surge was linked to rising demand from younger travellers, who helped make India one of the company’s fastest-growing markets. International visitors largely came from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. On average, guests stayed two nights and spent ₹11,000 per day on essentials outside accommodation, including restaurants, shopping, and transport.
The spending translated into significant benefits across industries. Of every ₹10,000 spent, about ₹3,800 went to restaurants, ₹2,400 to transport, ₹2,100 to shopping, ₹900 to arts and entertainment, and ₹800 to groceries. Overall, Airbnb accounted for 0.5% of India’s tourism GDP and supported 0.2% of related jobs — roughly one in every 417 positions. Its activities also added ₹3,100 crore to transport and storage, ₹1,500 crore to agriculture, and ₹1,300 crore to real estate.
In employment terms, the platform supported 38,000 transport and storage jobs, 19,600 in food and beverages, 16,800 in wholesale and retail, and 10,700 in manufacturing. Wages too saw a boost, with ₹810 crore in transport and storage, ₹290 crore in manufacturing, and ₹260 crore in real estate.
Another key trend was the rising share of non-urban bookings, which reached 16% of gross booking value in 2024, triple the 2019 level. This underlined growing interest in rural and lesser-known destinations beyond India’s metros.
As per news reports, Amanpreet Bajaj, Country Head – Airbnb India and Southeast Asia, said: “Travel today is transformative, and we're delighted to see Airbnb contributing meaningfully to India's economy through our vibrant network of hosts and guests.”

With jobs created across industries and new opportunities in rural regions, Airbnb has cemented its position as a critical player in India’s travel and hospitality growth story.
