India’s leading credit card issuer, SBI Card, has announced a revision in its late payment charges, with the new structure set to come into effect from May 1, 2026. The changes primarily impact customers with lower outstanding dues, increasing the penalty for missed payments.

The revision, notified on March 29, reflects a shift in how the company penalises delayed payments, especially in lower billing brackets.

Higher Charges for Lower Outstanding Amounts

Under the revised structure, customers with outstanding dues between ₹100 and ₹500 will now be charged ₹100 as a late payment fee. Earlier, no charges were levied in this slab.

Similarly, for dues between ₹500 and ₹1,000, the late payment charge has been increased to ₹500 from the current ₹400.

Other slabs remain unchanged. For example, outstanding amounts between ₹1,000 and ₹10,000 will continue to attract a fee of ₹750, while higher slabs up to ₹50,000 and above also see no revision.

This means the most significant impact will be felt by customers with relatively smaller dues, who will now face higher penalties for missing payment deadlines.

When Do Late Payment Charges Apply?

Late payment charges are applicable when a cardholder fails to pay at least the minimum amount due by the payment due date.

As per the company’s terms, an additional ₹100 charge may be levied if the minimum due is not paid for two consecutive billing cycles. This penalty continues for every subsequent cycle until the outstanding amount is cleared.

Such charges can compound the financial burden on users, especially when combined with interest costs on unpaid balances.

BPCL SBI Credit Card: Annual Fee Rule Revised

In a separate update, SBI Card has also revised the annual fee reversal condition for its BPCL SBI Credit Card.

From May 1, 2026, the ₹499 annual fee will be reversed only if the cardholder spends ₹1 lakh in a year. Currently, the threshold for fee reversal is ₹50,000.

This effectively doubles the spending requirement, making it harder for some users to qualify for a fee waiver.

Conclusion

The latest changes by SBI Card indicate a tightening of fee structures, particularly for customers with lower outstanding dues and moderate spending levels. As late payment charges increase and fee waiver thresholds rise, cardholders may need to be more disciplined with repayments and spending to avoid additional costs.
