The Income Tax Department has set 31 December 2025 as the new deadline for individuals who received their PAN using an Aadhaar enrolment ID before 1 October 2024. For all other PAN holders, missing the earlier deadline of 30 June 2023 had attracted penalties, and failure to link by the new date will make the PAN inoperative from 1 January 2026.

Consequences of Missing the Deadline

If Aadhaar is not linked with PAN before the deadline:

  • Your PAN becomes inactive, blocking ITR filing and verification.
  • Tax refunds cannot be issued.
  • Banking activities (opening accounts, credit/debit card applications) may be affected.
  • Higher TDS/TCS deductions may apply due to mismatched credits.
  • Pending ITRs remain unprocessed until reactivation.

Reactivation can take up to 30 days after linking. No ₹1,000 late fee applies for the new deadline, but penalties under Section 272B (up to ₹10,000) may apply for non-compliance.

How to Link Aadhaar with PAN?

  • Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal.
  • Enter your PAN and Aadhaar details.
  • Validate and submit the request.
  • Once UIDAI verifies it, your PAN becomes operative.

Conclusion

Linking Aadhaar with PAN is mandatory to avoid tax and financial disruptions. Completing it before 31 December 2025 ensures seamless filing, refunds, and banking transactions. Early compliance is strongly advised.
