Mutual funds remained selective in January 2026, increasing exposure to financials, metals and select consumption-linked names, while trimming positions in oil and gas, consumer stocks and some large-cap heavyweights. The reshuffle came even as overall equity inflows moderated from the previous month.
Equity mutual funds recorded net inflows of ₹24,000 crore in January, compared with ₹28,000 crore in December 2025. Excluding NFOs, net inflows stood at ₹23,200 crore, down from ₹24,500 crore in the previous month. Cash levels declined marginally to 4.8% of AUM in January from 4.9% in December, indicating continued deployment into equities.

Overall, mutual funds in January 2026 appeared to rotate into financials, metals, mining and IT, while trimming exposure to oil and gas, consumer stocks and select cyclical names. With inflows moderating and cash levels largely stable, the buying and selling trends suggested tactical rebalancing rather than a major shift in long-term strategy.
