Quant Mutual Fund has introduced the QSIF Sector Rotation Long-Short Fund, a specialised investment fund (SIF). The New Fund Offer (NFO) opened on April 27 and will close on May 11.

The fund is designed mainly for high-net-worth and experienced investors, with a minimum investment of ₹10 lakh.

What Makes This Fund Different?

This is an open-ended equity-oriented fund under the SIF framework. Unlike traditional mutual funds, it has greater flexibility and can take limited short positions using derivatives.

This allows the fund to try to earn returns in both rising and falling markets.

Sector Rotation Strategy Explained

The fund follows a sector rotation approach, meaning it invests in sectors expected to perform well at a given time.

Key features of the strategy:

  • Invests in sectors likely to outperform
  • Can short sectors expected to underperform
  • Usually keeps a concentrated portfolio of up to 4 sectors

This approach aims to capture market cycles and improve return potential.

Investment Approach and Risk Level

The fund aims for long-term capital growth by:

  • Investing in equities and equity-related instruments
  • Using derivatives selectively for short exposure

This long-short strategy seeks to:

  • Benefit from market ups and downs
  • Reduce downside risk compared to long-only funds

However, the scheme carries a “very high risk” rating and will be benchmarked against the Nifty 500 Total Return Index.

Key Investment Details

  • NFO price: ₹10 per unit
  • Minimum investment: ₹10 lakh (lump sum)
  • Fund manager team: Includes Sandeep Tandon and other managers

Part of Growing SIF Category

This launch reflects the growing trend of Specialised Investment Funds (SIFs) in India.
Asset managers are introducing advanced strategies such as:

  • Equity long-short
  • Hybrid long-short
  • Sector-focused investing

These products offer more flexibility but also come with higher complexity and risk, making them suitable mainly for informed investors.

Conclusion

Quant Mutual Fund’s new sector rotation long-short fund is designed for investors who can handle higher risk and want advanced strategies beyond traditional mutual funds. While the approach offers flexibility and the potential to benefit from changing market cycles, it is best suited for experienced investors with a long-term outlook.
