Gold and silver exchange-traded funds (ETFs) made up 71.9% of total passive fund inflows in September, according to data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI). The passive category saw total inflows of ₹19,057 crore during the month, indicating higher investor preference for precious metals amid market volatility.

Precious Metals Lead Inflows

Gold ETFs received ₹8,363 crore, forming 43.9% of total passive inflows in September. Silver ETFs followed with ₹5,342 crore, accounting for 28%. The rise in investments in these segments was supported by firm gold prices, a weaker rupee, and steady demand for safe-haven assets.

Passive Fund Market Update

Assets under management (AUM) for passive funds rose 3.9% month-on-month to ₹12.99 lakh crore. The category recorded its 59th consecutive month of net inflows. The increase was mainly driven by inflows into gold and silver ETFs and continued investor interest in index-based instruments.

Hybrid and Equity Fund Trends

Hybrid funds saw net inflows of ₹9,397 crore in September, with AUM up 2.5% to ₹10.33 lakh crore. Multi-asset allocation funds grew 6.3% to ₹1.40 lakh crore, while equity savings and balanced hybrid funds rose 4.5% and 2%, respectively. Equity mutual funds recorded net inflows of ₹30,422 crore for the 55th straight month.

Debt Funds and SIP Flows

Open-ended debt funds saw AUM decline 4.9% to ₹17.80 lakh crore due to outflows linked to advance tax payments. Systematic investment plans (SIPs) reached a record ₹29,361 crore in September, up 3.9% month-on-month and 19.8% year-on-year. SIP assets stood at ₹15.52 lakh crore, accounting for 20.5% of total industry AUM.

Industry Overview

The mutual fund industry’s total AUM rose to ₹75.61 lakh crore in September from ₹75.19 lakh crore in August. Total folios increased by 30.14 lakh to 25.19 crore. Equity and passive fund categories together accounted for over 90% of the new folios added during the month.
