As per Economic Times report, Food delivery major Zomato is preparing to roll out customer data sharing features with restaurants, marking a crucial shift in its platform approach. This move follows discussions with the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), potentially resolving long-standing concerns over data masking and platform practices.

Zomato’s Data Sharing Initiative Near Finalisation

Zomato is working closely with NRAI to finalise a framework that allows data sharing with restaurant partners. Customers will be prompted to provide consent before their phone numbers and data are shared for direct marketing and promotional updates. The decision could settle a near 10-year conflict between aggregators and restaurateurs over access to valuable consumer data.

NRAI, which represents over 5,00,000 restaurants, has also initiated similar discussions with Swiggy, signalling a potential trend across the industry. Zomato has already begun taking customer consent through its platform, rolling the feature out gradually.

Restaurants Demand Data for Personalised Engagement

Restaurants argue that access to data such as average order size, cuisine preference, and location insights is critical for crafting tailored offers. This data-driven approach helps enhance marketing efficiency and customer retention strategies. In past instances, aggregators received backlash from users over privacy issues, thus stalling earlier initiatives.

As per the news report, a senior industry executive noted that scope and boundaries of shared data are now being clearly defined to limit misuse. Transparency and user consent remain central to the rollout plan, addressing prior consumer concerns.

Urban Shift with New Players and Market Trends

The development comes as Ownly, a food delivery service by bike taxi platform Rapido, has agreed to share data with restaurants, gaining support from NRAI. This suggests increasing acceptance of data access as a standard among upcoming platforms.

According to news reports, India’s food delivery industry was worth $10 billion in FY25, accounting for 14% of the overall ₹5,60,000 crore food services market. Zomato had 3,27,000 monthly active restaurants, and Swiggy had 2,64,000 during July to September period.

Eternal Share Price Performance

As of November 20, 2025, at 11:45 AM, Eternal share price was trading at ₹308.00 up by 0.46% from the previous closing price.

Conclusion

Zomato’s move to share customer data with restaurants marks a shift in aggregator-restaurant relations, with Swiggy expected to follow suit. It reflects evolving dynamics in India’s digital food delivery landscape, fuelled by increasing demand for transparency and targeted marketing insights.
