Tata Electronics has had to change the design of its main semiconductor fab in Dholera after soil tests showed that the ground was not firm enough for the original plan, according to The Economic Times report.
The soil in the area is soft, has clay and silt, and a high level of salt. This makes it weaker and more likely to shift, which is a problem for chip fabs that need stable ground and very low vibration.
To understand the issue, Tata Electronics brought in Fugro along with Cengrs and Geo Dynamics Engineers. They carried out detailed checks on the site and advised how the foundations should be rebuilt. Construction on the revised design began about three months ago. ET reported that the changes will not delay the overall project.
The fab is being built with Taiwan’s PSMC at a cost of about ₹91,000 crore. The company plans to start chip production by December 2026. More than 20,000 skilled jobs are expected once the plant is operational. Tata Electronics told ET that work at the site is moving as planned.
As per the news reports, the work already completed will not be scrapped. It will be used for supporting buildings such as power units, utility blocks, water treatment areas, storage, and warehouse spaces. Only the main fab structure will follow the revised foundation plan.

The changes address the ground issues flagged during early work, and the project remains on its planned schedule. Other construction on the site continues as planned.
