Media, PSU Bank and Real Estate Sector See Highest Volatility in 2025

Media, PSU Bank and Real Estate sectors posted highest annualised volatility at 18.7%, 17.4% and 16.7% respectively in September 2025.

As per the latest SEBI bulletin based on BSE and NSE data, sectoral indices for media, PSU banks and real estate registered the highest annualised volatility as of September 2025, reflecting notable price fluctuations across these segments over the past year. 

Top Sectors by Annualised Volatility 

The Nifty Media index recorded the highest annualised volatility of 18.7% in September 2025. This was followed by the Nifty PSU Bank index at 17.4% and the Nifty Realty index at 16.7%, indicating significant price variability through the period.  

These values are drawn from the deviation of daily price movements from the average index value across 12 months. 

Other Sectors with Notable Volatility 

Metal and technology-focused sectors also exhibited substantial yearly volatility. The Nifty Metal index saw a variation of 15.5%, while Nifty IT posted 15.0%. The BSE Utilities index followed close with a volatility of 13.8%.  

Additional relevant figures include BSE Power at 12.9%, Nifty Oil & Gas at 11.6%, and Nifty FMCG at 11.5%.

Moderately Volatile to Stable Sectors 

Indices that experienced comparatively smoother movement include BSE Cons Discretionary with 8.3%, Nifty Bank at 8.4% and BSE Industrials at 8.5%.  

Others in similar range included BSE Capital Goods (9.1%), Nifty Auto (9.3%), and Nifty Fin Services (9.5%). Even sectors like Nifty Pharma and Nifty Healthcare remained below 11% volatility. 

Conclusion 

As of September 2025, media, PSU bank and real estate indices reflected the most fluctuation according to SEBI data. Meanwhile, consumer discretionary and related sectors maintained stability with relatively low deviation in their index values.
