Domestic telecom equipment manufacturer HFCL has commenced the first large-scale rollout of indigenously designed and manufactured network routers in partnership with state-run ITI Limited under the government’s flagship BharatNet rural broadband programme, as per PTI report.
The deployment marks a significant step in India’s push to reduce dependence on foreign telecom equipment and strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities.
The initial deployment was carried out at Rouri Gram Panchayat in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district, where HFCL’s locally developed IP/MPLS routers were installed to enable fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) connectivity for rural households.
This marks the first instance in India where domestically developed routing technology has been used to deliver broadband services directly to consumers.
“In a groundbreaking development at Rouri Gram Panchayat in Solan district, Himachal Pradesh, HFCL's domestically designed and manufactured IP/MPLS routers have been successfully deployed by ITI Limited, enabling Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) connectivity to rural subscribers.” said Mahendra Nahata, Managing Director, HFCL.
The company has secured orders for deploying over 80,000 routers under the BharatNet programme, which aims to connect more than 2.5 lakh Gram Panchayats nationwide through high-speed optical fibre networks.
India’s network router market has largely been dominated by US manufacturers following restrictions imposed on Chinese telecom gear under national security regulations.
Beyond Himachal Pradesh, HFCL’s routers are being deployed across key telecom circles including Uttar Pradesh East, Uttar Pradesh West, Punjab, West Bengal, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
According to IMARC, India’s router market was valued at about $874 million in 2024 and is projected to expand to $1.73 billion by 2033, highlighting strong long-term growth potential.
State-run C-DoT has also developed indigenous routers, though large-scale deployments are yet to begin, while Tejas Networks has secured orders for 50,000 routers, with rollout still pending.

HFCL’s large-scale indigenous router deployment under BharatNet marks a critical step towards strengthening India’s telecom infrastructure, accelerating rural broadband connectivity, and advancing the country’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
