The Government has notified a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Pvt Ltd at Dholera in Gujarat, as per PTI reports.
The notification, issued on 9 April by the Department of Commerce, allows units engaged in electronic hardware, software, and IT-enabled services to operate within the zone.
The proposal had been cleared earlier by the Board of Approval, the authority that takes decisions on SEZ applications.
Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing has proposed an investment of ₹91,000 crore for the project. The plan includes setting up a semiconductor fabrication unit, an area where domestic production capacity remains limited.
The SEZ will be spread across 66.16 hectares. According to official estimates, the project could create around 21,000 jobs over time, depending on the pace of construction and operations.
The notification follows a change in SEZ rules announced last year for semiconductor and electronics component sectors. The minimum contiguous land requirement was reduced from 50 hectares to 10 hectares.
The revision was introduced to allow such projects to be set up without the earlier land threshold, which had been cited as a constraint in some cases.
A number of semiconductor-related SEZs have been notified since the rule change. These include CG Semi with a proposed investment of ₹2,150 crore and Kaynes Semicon with ₹681 crore.
Micron Semiconductor Technology India has proposed ₹13,000 crore, while the Hubballi Durable Goods Cluster has outlined an investment of ₹100 crore. These projects are at different stages of development.
