Indian stock markets are expected to open slightly lower on December 26 after the Christmas holiday. Trading volumes are likely to remain thin as the year-end approaches and many global markets are partially closed.
GIFT Nifty indicated a cautious start for Indian equities. It was trading near 26,143, down 33 points or 0.13% compared with the previous close of Nifty futures, suggesting a flat-to-negative opening.
Asian equities edged higher in thin holiday trade. Japanese and South Korean markets gained, while several Asian markets remained shut due to holidays. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index extended its year-end rally for the sixth straight session.
US markets closed at record highs in the pre-Christmas session. The S&P 500, Dow Jones, and Nasdaq ended higher as economic data eased fears of a sharp slowdown, though trading volumes were light.
Japanese government bond yields eased slightly. The 10-year JGB yield slipped from multi-decade highs as expectations of controlled debt issuance offered some relief, even as rate hike signals remain.
Ukraine shared details of a new US-backed peace proposal to end the war with Russia. While some progress has been made, unresolved territorial issues continue to keep geopolitical risks elevated.
Precious metals remained strong. Silver hit a fresh record above $73 per ounce, while gold traded near its all-time high, supported by geopolitical tensions and safe-haven demand.
Oil prices headed for their strongest weekly gain since October. WTI crude traded above $58 per barrel after reports of a partial US blockade affecting Venezuelan crude shipments.
With thin volumes and mixed global cues, Indian markets may trade cautiously today. Gift Nifty points to a flat start, while precious metals and oil remain key global indicators to watch.
