On February 11, 2026, the Delhi High Court urged the parties locked in a legal battle over the late businessman Sunjay Kapur’s estate to consider mediation, describing the case as a “very sorry state of affairs”, as per news reports.

Court Observation and Call for Mediation

Justice Mini Pushkarna noted that the dispute displayed a grim picture of family conflict and that “a lot of dirty linen was being washed in the open”.

The bench highlighted that all parties had suffered personal loss while also being blessed with considerable financial wealth and warned that such wealth should not become a source of bitterness. The judge directed both sides to explore an amicable settlement through mediation.

Parties and Their Claims

Priya Sachdev Kapur, the third wife of Sunjay Kapur, produced a will dated 2025 that allegedly bequeaths the entire personal estate to her.

Former wife Karisma Kapoor, together with their 2 children, has challenged the will on grounds of forgery. Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, has also questioned the will’s authenticity and filed a separate suit seeking to declare the family’s trust illegal.

Trust Valuation and Interim Dividend Issue

The family trust, reportedly valued at several thousand crores, is under scrutiny. Rani Kapur has sought a direction that an interim dividend of around ₹28 crore should not be released to Priya Kapur.

The bench also considered Priya Kapur’s application to reject her mother‑in‑law’s suit, and notices were issued in both matters.

The matter is scheduled for a further hearing on March 23, 2026, where the court will assess any progress towards mediation and address the pending applications of the parties.

Conclusion

The Delhi High Court’s intervention underscores the court’s preference for mediation in the Sunjay Kapur estate dispute, aiming to protect the interests of all stakeholders while reducing public exposure of family conflicts.
