As per news report, Tata Sons-owned Air India has announced a revision to its fuel surcharge structure for both domestic and international routes.

This adjustment comes as the cost of global jet fuel continues to surge, prompting the airline to shift from a flat surcharge to a distance-based model.

Details on the Revised Fuel Surcharge

Air India's new surcharge policy will take effect from April 8, 2026. The airline has decided to implement a distance-based surcharge following the government's decision to cap domestic aviation turbine fuel price hikes at 25%.

Under the domestic route revision, passengers will incur a ₹299 surcharge for distances between 0 to 500 km, ₹399 for 501 to 1,000 km, ₹549 for 1,001 to 1,500 km, ₹749 for 1,501 to 2,000 km, and ₹899 for journeys exceeding 2,000 km.

Surcharges on International Flights

While specific surcharge rates for international flights were not outlined in detail, Air India has confirmed that similar adjustments will be reflected in their international pricing to match the ongoing increases in jet fuel costs.

These changes are part of the airline's broader strategy to manage operating expenses efficiently.

Implications for Airline Operations

The shift to a distance-based surcharge system showcases Air India's proactive approach in tackling rising fuel costs, a move that might influence fare adjustments and operational strategies.

By aligning surcharges with flight distances, the airline aims to distribute the financial burden more equitably across its passenger base.

Conclusion

The decision by Air India to revise its fuel surcharge structure aligns with the rising global jet fuel costs. By transitioning to a distance-based surcharge, Air India seeks to mitigate the impact of fuel price volatility while providing a clear breakdown of additional travel costs to its customers.
