US President Donald Trump has announced the termination of trade talks with Canada, citing an advertisement aired in Canada that criticised US tariffs.
The ad, reportedly costing US$75,000, featured a manipulated version of a Ronald Reagan address condemning tariffs and trade wars. Trump called the move a “fraudulent interference” with the US legal system and an “egregious attempt” to influence court decisions.
In a post on Truth Social on October 23, 2025, Trump stated that the Ronald Reagan Foundation had confirmed the video was fake and used without authorisation. Hence, he had decided to terminate all trade talks with Canada.
The announcement follows increasing tensions between Washington and Ottawa, especially after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed plans to double exports to countries outside the US in response to Trump’s aggressive trade measures.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford shared the controversial anti-tariff ad on his X account earlier this month. The ad used excerpts from Ronald Reagan’s 1987 radio address warning against trade wars.
In his post, Ford wrote, “Using every tool we have, we’ll never stop making the case against American tariffs on Canada.” The campaign marks Ontario’s latest attempt to rally US public opinion against Trump’s tariffs, which have hit Canadian industries hard.

Earlier in April, Trump introduced what he called “Liberation Day” tariffs, imposing new levies on Canadian exports, including autos, digital services, steel and energy products. Canada retaliated with equivalent tariffs. Currently, Canadian exports face up to 35% tariffs from the US, while bilateral negotiations on steel and aluminium had been ongoing before Trump’s latest announcement.
Speaking to reporters on October 24, 2025, Carney reiterated that Canada “will not allow unfair US access to its markets” if trade discussions continue to stall. He emphasised that Canada would accelerate efforts to diversify its export markets, strengthening ties with Asia-Pacific and European nations to reduce dependence on the US.
Trump’s decision to halt talks could deepen economic frictions between the two neighbours, potentially affecting billions in bilateral trade and cross-border supply chains.
Trump’s abrupt termination of trade negotiations underscores escalating US-Canada tensions. The dispute, rooted in tariffs and political messaging, marks a new chapter in North American trade relations as both sides reposition their economic strategies for the future.
