Amazon Leads Global Rankings as World’s Largest Company by Annual Sales, Overtakes Walmart

Amazon.com Inc. has reported revenue of $717 billion for the year ended December 2025, placing it ahead of Walmart Inc., which posted $713.2 billion for the 12 months ended 31 January.
As per the news reports, these figures mark the first time Amazon has led global companies by annual sales. Walmart had held the top position for over a decade based on revenue.
Different Reporting Calendars
The comparison is based on separate financial years. Amazon reports on a calendar-year basis, while Walmart’s fiscal year concludes at the end of January. The gap between their latest annual revenues stands at $3.8 billion.
Both companies earn most of their income in the United States, although they operate across multiple international markets.
Retail Presence and Online Reach
Amazon’s business is primarily online. Its website and mobile applications record roughly 2.7 billion visits each month. Walmart, by contrast, runs more than 10,000 stores and warehouse clubs worldwide, making it the largest retailer by physical presence.
Walmart has expanded its online operations in recent years. Amazon has also entered physical retail, including its 2017 acquisition of Whole Foods Market, though stores form a smaller portion of its overall revenue.
Role of Cloud Computing
Amazon’s cloud division, Amazon Web Services (AWS), accounts for a meaningful share of its turnover. Without AWS, Amazon’s 2025 revenue would have been $588 billion, below Walmart’s annual total.
Cloud services and data centre operations have added to Amazon’s overall sales. Walmart does not operate a comparable cloud business.
Scale and Market Value
Revenue size shows the volume of goods and services sold but does not directly correspond to market capitalisation. Nvidia Corp. currently holds a higher stock market value than both Amazon and Walmart.
