Sahaj Mitrs are village-level digital entrepreneurs who run Sahaj’s rural centres and now form the 4.5 lakh-strong frontline driving the LIC–Sahaj insurance alliance into Bharat’s small towns and villages.
Sahaj Mitr is a village-level entrepreneur (VLE) who operates a Sahaj centre, promoting Sahaj’s digital and financial services among rural and semi-urban citizens. Typically located under a Gram Panchayat, a Sahaj Mitr acts as a local retailer-cum-service provider for e-governance, financial, utility, education and now insurance solutions.
These entrepreneurs are usually from the same village or a nearby cluster, which gives them deep local trust and a strong social connection. Their role blends commerce and community service, as they participate in rural development while earning a livelihood through commissions and service fees.
LIC has entered a strategic partnership with Sahaj Insurance Services, a corporate agent arm of Sahaj Retail, to expand life insurance penetration in rural and semi-urban India. Under this collaboration, Sahaj’s assisted digital service network will distribute LIC’s life insurance products, especially in regions where awareness and access have historically been low.
Sahaj operates through about 4.5 lakh digitally enabled rural centres that collectively serve more than 70 crore citizens across the country. Through these centres, trained Sahaj Mitrs will help customers understand, purchase and manage LIC policies as well as selected government-backed insurance and social security schemes.
Within the LIC–Sahaj tie-up, Sahaj Mitrs become the human interface for complex insurance processes, turning them into simple, guided journeys. They explain product features in local language, assist in filling proposal forms, complete KYC using digital tools and upload applications through Sahaj’s tech platform.
Their responsibilities also cover ongoing policy servicing such as premium payment support, status checks and basic claim assistance at the village level. By offering this assisted digital model, Sahaj Mitrs reduce documentation pain points, travel costs and psychological barriers that often prevent first-time rural customers from buying life insurance.
Sahaj’s network of around 4.5 lakh rural centres gives LIC an on-ground presence in deep Bharat where traditional branches or agents are sparse.
Many rural households are still unfamiliar with online insurance journeys; Sahaj Mitrs translate digital workflows into easy, assisted experiences.
By enabling access to affordable life and social security schemes, this network directly supports India’s broader financial inclusion and protection agenda.
The partnership is expected to improve life insurance awareness, increase policy enrollments and strengthen servicing in rural and semi-urban markets. As more citizens get protection cover, households gain better shock-absorption capacity against death or income loss, improving overall financial resilience.
Over time, the data and experience generated through this network can enable more tailored products for small-ticket rural needs, such as micro-insurance and bundled social security offerings. This positions Sahaj Mitrs as a critical channel in transforming insurance from an urban-centric product to a mass, pan-Bharat safety net.

Sahaj Mitrs are not just agents or retailers; they are digitally empowered village entrepreneurs who bring LIC’s protection promise to the doorstep of rural and semi-urban India. Backed by a 4.5 lakh-strong assisted digital network, they convert the LIC–Sahaj alliance from a boardroom partnership into real-world financial security for crores of citizens.
