As per the PTI report, India and the United States are set to restart bilateral trade talks from August 25 to August 29, following a missed August 1 deadline and the imposition of a 25% US tariff on certain Indian exports. This upcoming 6th round of discussions aims to resolve continuing trade barriers and support struggling Indian exporters.

6th Round of Talks After Tariffs Disrupt Indian Exporters

As per the PTI report, the bilateral trade talks between India and the US are returning to the negotiation table in the last week of August. This critical phase comes after the 2 nations failed to meet their deadline on August 1, 2025, to seal a trade deal.

In response, the US implemented a 25% tariff on various Indian goods. The talks aim to achieve consensus on contentious issues and potentially avoid further economic strain on Indian exporters.

Government’s Strategy to Shield Export Sectors

In response to the tariff burden, the Indian government is actively exploring relief measures for affected exporters. The Ministry of Commerce has conducted discussions with key sectors, including steel, marine, agriculture, and food processing. Major support options under evaluation include extension of the RoDTEP and RoSCTL schemes, interest rate subsidies, quicker reimbursement of dues, and introduction of a direct shipping line to the US to reduce logistics costs.

Exporters Demand Direct Relief Amid Tariff Pressures

As per the report, companies exporting to the US will be impacted by the 25% tariffs, and they are pushing for immediate financial assistance and easing of business credit. Exporters have also requested collaboration with state governments to tailor support for region-specific industries, which could be vital in cushioning the economic impact of these new trade restrictions.

As per the report, Tariffs are disproportionately affecting several sectors, with petroleum, jewellery, and precious stones being among the hardest hit.

Conclusion

India and the US are preparing for a crucial sixth round of trade negotiations beginning August 25, 2025. The outcome of these discussions will be pivotal.
