India has returned to the third position in the global wind power market in 2025 after a four-year gap, supported by its highest-ever annual capacity additions, according to a report by BloombergNEF. The country now trails only China and the United States in terms of new wind installations.
The report forecasts that India will add 6.2 GW of wind capacity in 2025, bringing it close to the US, the world’s second-largest wind market. By November 2025, India had already commissioned 5.8 GW of new wind projects, surpassing its previous annual record of 4.2 GW set in 2017.
According to BNEF, the sharp rise in annual installations has enabled India to move ahead of Brazil and Germany, both of which had ranked above India over the past 3 years. The country had slipped below the top 5 in 2020 and remained at 5th position through 2024 before regaining third place this year.
India’s wind sector revival has been driven largely by the growing adoption of complex renewable energy auctions. These auctions bundle wind power with other generation sources and battery energy storage systems, improving reliability and firmness of clean electricity supply.
Such auction structures require developers to oversize projects beyond the contracted capacity to ensure consistent power delivery. In 2024, India awarded nearly 60 GW of clean energy capacity, with about two-thirds of it coming from complex projects, the report noted.

India’s return to the top 3 global wind markets highlights a strong rebound in renewable energy deployment. With record installations and a shift towards integrated clean energy auctions, the country is strengthening its position in the global transition to low-carbon power.
