India Post has decided to discontinue its Registered Post service from September 1, 2025, as per news reports. The service, which has been in use for over 5 decades, will be merged with the existing Speed Post system. This is part of operational restructuring within the department.

Following the merger, Speed Post will take over the responsibilities previously managed under Registered Post. The system already offers delivery tracking and faster processing, and will now become the single option for time-sensitive postal communications.

Price Increase for Users

Registered Post was priced at ₹25.96, with an added ₹5 for every 20 grams. Speed Post begins at ₹41 for parcels up to 50 grams. This change represents a 20-25% increase in basic cost, which may affect those relying on cheaper postal options.

A directive has been sent by the Secretary and Director General of Posts to courts, educational institutions, and all government offices. These entities have been asked to shift their mailing systems to Speed Post by the September deadline.

Declining Usage Cited as Reason

As per the reports, the decision comes after a steady drop in Registered Post usage. Between 2011-12 and 2019-20, volumes declined from 244.4 million to 184.6 million articles. The fall has been attributed to the rise of digital alternatives and increased private courier activity.

Registered Post had a wide application in legal and official processes. It was recognised in courts and commonly used by banks and government departments due to its proof-of-dispatch and delivery features.

Conclusion

India Post will discontinue Registered Post from September 1, 2025 and shift its operations to Speed Post. While services will continue, users will need to adjust to the pricing and process changes under the new system.
