The Government of India announced a significant expansion of the Ayushman Bharat, Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in Oct 2024.
Following the expansion, the scheme now covers all senior citizens aged 70 years and above, regardless of their socio-economic background. Under this extension, eligible beneficiaries will receive free healthcare benefits worth up to ₹5 lakh per year through the newly introduced Ayushman Vay Vandana cards.
Since its launch, the Ayushman Vay Vandana scheme has made a significant impact, with over 1.06 lakh claims settled to date. This milestone reflects the scheme’s growing success in delivering accessible and affordable healthcare to India’s senior citizens.
A key feature of AB-PMJAY is its portability, allowing beneficiaries, including those under the Vay Vandana scheme, to access healthcare services across the country. With a network of 31,466 empanelled hospitals, beneficiaries can receive treatment irrespective of their place of residence. This provision promotes equitable and uninterrupted access to quality healthcare for the elderly population nationwide.
In addition to public hospitals, beneficiaries of the Vay Vandana scheme can avail treatment from a wide array of 14,194 private healthcare providers empanelled under the program. To maintain high standards, the National Health Authority (NHA) has established comprehensive Hospital Empanelment and Management (HEM) Guidelines. These guidelines ensure consistent quality and efficient service delivery across all empanelled institutions under AB-PMJAY.
