A group of 8 cooperative organisations have jointly set up a new entity, the Multi-State Sahakari Taxi Cooperative Ltd, to launch a taxi service under the brand name ‘Bharat’, as per PTI reports. The cooperative was registered on June 6, 2025, and plans to start operations by the end of 2025. The initiative has an authorised capital of ₹300 crore.
The cooperative has already onboarded 200 drivers from Delhi, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra. This is to increase this number by working with more cooperatives across other states. Membership drives are currently underway to scale up operations.
As per the reports, a tender has been floated to select a technology partner responsible for developing the ride-booking app. The app is expected to be ready by the end of 2025. Once launched, it will function as a single platform across the country.
The taxi cooperative is fully funded by its 8 founding members. These include NCDC, IFFCO, GCMMF, KRIBHCO, NABARD, NDDB, and NCEL. There is no government equity in the venture, and all investment has come from the cooperative bodies involved.
The cooperative has brought in a technology consultant along with IIM-Bangalore to work on its marketing and expansion strategy. The service is expected to follow a cooperative pricing model aimed at serving both drivers and users.
The taxi service was mentioned last month by Cooperation Minister Amit Shah during the announcement of a national cooperative policy. This is part of a wider plan to increase cooperative participation in key service sectors.
