India’s electronics sector is set to witness significant employment growth by 2030, driven by artificial intelligence (AI) adoption and the establishment of domestic semiconductor manufacturing units, as per The Economic Times.
Artificial intelligence is expected to reshape the nature of jobs within India’s technology and electronics ecosystem. MeitY Secretary S Krishnan stated, “By 2030, 4 million (40 lakhs) jobs will be created,” while adding that “coding and programming kind of roles fundamentally will go but newer jobs like application development will come up.”
A NITI Aayog-backed study further highlights that AI could generate up to 4 million AI-first roles by 2030–31, although it may also displace around 1.5–2 million existing jobs. The study was conducted by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in collaboration with Nasscom.
Currently, the electronics sector employs about 1.5–2 million people, and MeitY estimates that nearly 4.5 million individuals could be hired across the broader electronics industry over the next five years.
India’s entry into semiconductor manufacturing is expected to create high-skilled employment alongside indirect jobs through supporting and allied industries.
To strengthen domestic manufacturing, the government introduced the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) in 2025 to reduce dependence on imported high-value components and integrate India into global value chains.
The ECMS currently employs about 60,000 people and is projected to generate more than 1.4 lakh direct jobs by 2030–31, with around 25 companies approved across three application rounds.
On semiconductor fabrication, India has approved 10 semiconductor-related facilities, including plants by Tata Electronics, CG Semi, Kaynes Technology and Micron Technology, which are expected to commence commercial production in 2026.

India’s electronics industry is entering a transformative phase, led by AI adoption and domestic semiconductor manufacturing. While some traditional roles may decline, new high-skilled and application-based jobs will expand. Government initiatives and industry investments position the sector as a major employment generator by 2030.
