Indian Railways has sanctioned a major project with a budget of ₹398 crore to strengthen its communication infrastructure, as per ANI report.  

This project involves the installation of optical fibre cables in the Western Railway's Ahmedabad and Ratlam Divisions. 

Optical Fibre Installation in Western Railway Divisions 

Under the newly approved project, Indian Railways will provide 2x48 fibre Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) over 1,929 route kilometres. This includes 1,456 route kilometres in the Ahmedabad Division and 473 in the Ratlam Division.  

This endeavour forms part of the larger "Provision of Kavach with Long Term Evolution (LTE) communication backbone on Indian Railways' balance routes," which has an overall sanctioned cost of ₹27,693 crore under the Works Programme 2024-25. 

The Aim of the ₹398 Crore Project 

The primary objective of this ₹398 crore project is to enhance the capacity, reliability, and efficiency of railway communication systems.  

The modernisation will support advanced signalling systems such as Kavach, enabling seamless data transmission across the network. 

Contribution to Overall Infrastructure Development 

This project is a sub-umbrella component of the larger ₹2,800 crore investment for the Western Railway under the Works Programme 2024-25.  

It will significantly contribute to the digital transformation and modernisation of Indian Railways, promoting improved operational efficiency and service delivery.
