India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has temporarily relaxed pilot flight duty time limitations for long-haul flights, as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to disrupt global air traffic.
The move comes at a time when airlines are grappling with longer routes, airspace restrictions, and operational challenges, raising concerns around efficiency and crew availability.
According to officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), the relaxation is aimed at ensuring smoother flight operations amid ongoing airspace curbs triggered by the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran.
Under the revised norms, the DGCA has extended flight time (FT) by 1 hour and 30 minutes to 11.30 hours and the flight duty period (FDP) by 1 hour and 45 minutes to 11.45 hours for long-haul flights operated with two pilots. These changes are temporary and are designed to help airlines manage extended flight routes without significantly impacting schedules.
The decision comes against the backdrop of stricter pilot fatigue norms introduced last year, which increased mandatory weekly rest to 48 hours from 36 hours. While these rules were aimed at improving safety and pilot well-being, they also created operational bottlenecks for airlines.
To address these challenges, the DGCA has stepped up monitoring measures, including weekly and fortnightly reviews of airline operations and bi-monthly inspections. These checks focus on roster management, crew availability, system robustness, and adherence to safety norms.
The relaxation also reflects lessons from disruptions faced by IndiGo in late 2025. The airline struggled to adapt to the new duty norms during peak travel season, leading to widespread cancellations and passenger inconvenience.
Government officials later highlighted issues such as over-optimisation, inadequate preparedness, and gaps in operational planning. The episode underscored the need for better alignment between regulatory changes and airline readiness.

The DGCA’s temporary relaxation of pilot duty norms highlights the delicate balance between operational efficiency and safety in aviation. While the move is expected to ease immediate pressures caused by global disruptions, it also reinforces the importance of robust planning and compliance by airlines. As geopolitical uncertainties persist, regulatory flexibility combined with strict oversight will remain key to maintaining stability in India’s aviation sector.
