Ride-hailing platform Rapido has expanded its food delivery offering, Ownly, across all areas of Bengaluru after running a limited pilot for about six months in select neighbourhoods, as per news reports.
Ownly was initially tested from August last year in pockets such as Koramangala, HSR Layout and BTM Layout. After evaluating operations, logistics capability and restaurant onboarding during the trial period, the company has now opened the service across the city.
During a virtual town hall hosted by the National Restaurants Association of India (NRAI), Vivek Vashishta, head of new initiatives at Rapido, said the pilot phase focused on building the technology stack, delivery network and customer support systems, even though early restaurant partners did not immediately see order growth.
“There is a reason we did a pilot for six months. In these six months, our restaurants who signed up with us early did not see any growth. They did not see any growth because we have not started marketing yet and will be doing that soon. If you spend money, customers come, and we are committed to doing that,” he said.
He added that expansion into other cities is planned soon, though no specific timeline has been disclosed.
Ownly operates on a zero-commission structure for restaurants. Instead of charging platform commissions or onboarding fees, the service earns through a delivery charge paid by customers. At present, it is levying a flat delivery fee of ₹30 per order, regardless of order value.
The platform has been built in collaboration with NRAI and is positioned as an alternative to the dominant food delivery players. It is designed to address restaurant concerns around high commissions, deep discounting pressure and limited access to customer data.
Ownly says it does not charge listing fees, subscription fees or visibility fees, and follows what it describes as a more neutral discovery model for partner restaurants.
Currently, deliveries are being handled by a specialised fleet, but the company plans to gradually train its two-wheeler rider network, referred to as captains, to manage food delivery orders as well.
Rapido’s broader mobility platform handles around 6 million rides per day, which the company sees as a base to scale delivery operations efficiently.
