  • Broadcasting Rights

One of the sources of revenue for the IPL is broadcasting rights. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sells media rights to television and digital platforms for a multi-year period.

  • Television Rights: Major broadcasters bid for the rights to air IPL matches on TV. Star Sports acquired the TV broadcasting rights for the 2023-2027 cycle for ₹23,575 crore.
  • Digital Rights: With the rise of digital streaming, Viacom18 secured online streaming rights. For the same period (2023-2027), Viacom18 won the digital rights for ₹23,758 crore. Reliance Industries Limited owns Viacom18. 
  • Sponsorship Revenue

The IPL attracts major brands as sponsors, contributing significantly to its income. The title sponsor pays an amount to have their name associated with the league. For example, TATA Group secured the IPL title sponsorship for ₹670 crore (2022-2023). There are several other companies that are official sponsors, paying a premium to associate with the league.

Sponsorship revenue continues to rise as IPL’s brand value grows.

  • Franchise Fees and Team Revenue

Each IPL team is owned by business conglomerates, celebrities, and corporate entities who pay franchise fees to the BCCI. When a new team is introduced, ownership rights are sold. 

Also, a portion of the league’s revenue from media rights and sponsorships is distributed among the franchises. Teams also generate revenue through merchandise sales, sponsorships, and local partnerships.

  • Ticket Sales and Matchday Revenue

A significant portion of IPL’s income comes from ticket sales. Each stadium has a seating capacity ranging from 25,000 to 60,000, with ticket prices varying. 

IPL matches attract huge crowds, generating substantial ticket revenue. VIP enclosures, corporate boxes, and premium hospitality sections provide additional income. Teams and stadium authorities share the ticket revenue, boosting overall earnings.

  • Merchandising and Licensing

The IPL generates revenue through merchandise sales, including jerseys, caps, accessories, and collectables. Official IPL merchandise is sold online and in retail stores, providing fans with an opportunity to support their favourite teams. As IPL's popularity grows globally, merchandising revenues can continue to expand.

Advertising is a major revenue stream, with brands spending huge amounts on TV and digital ads. Advertisers pay fees for commercials during match breaks. Online platforms earn from in-app ads, pre-roll advertisements, and interactive promotions. Banners, LED boards, and boundary advertisements in stadiums add to revenue.
