Public sector banking stocks continued rising for the third consecutive session on February 18, even as the broader market stayed range-bound. The rally was broad-based, with all index constituents trading higher and several banks touching fresh 52-week highs.

Top gainers included Punjab National Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Union Bank of India, and UCO Bank.

Strong Earnings Support Sentiment

The uptrend in PSU banking stocks has been driven by solid December-quarter results, including:

  • Faster system-wide credit growth
  • Improving profit margins
  • Better asset quality and lower stress levels

Despite earlier concerns about higher government borrowing in the upcoming fiscal year, banking stocks have staged a sharp recovery.

SBI and Broader Banking Momentum

Shares of State Bank of India also traded slightly higher. Earlier this month, SBI’s market capitalisation crossed ₹12 lakh crore, supported by a strong seven-month rally in the stock.

The broader banking space remains close to record levels, reflecting strong investor confidence in the sector.
