India recorded higher electricity consumption in December as colder temperatures, particularly in northern regions, led to increased use of heating appliances.
Government data also showed a rise in peak power demand compared with the same period last year.
The trend highlights seasonal influences on electricity usage and has drawn market attention to power sector stocks.
Electricity consumption rose to 138.39 billion units in December, reflecting an increase of nearly 7% compared with the same month last year.
The growth was largely driven by higher usage of appliances such as geysers and room heaters as winter conditions intensified in several parts of the country.
Peak power demand met during December climbed to 241.20 GW, up from 224.23 GW recorded a year earlier.
While this remained below the all-time high of around 250 GW seen in May 2024, demand levels continued to stay elevated.
Government estimates indicate that peak demand could rise further during the summer months.
According to the India Meteorological Department, colder conditions are expected to persist into early January, particularly in northern India.
Power sector stocks showed mixed movement in morning trade on January 2. NTPC shares traded at around ₹342, up about 1.5% from the previous close, after moving between ₹335.95 and ₹342.10 during the session.
In contrast, Adani Power shares were slightly lower at approximately ₹147.94, down around 0.6%, after trading in a narrow range between ₹147.30 and ₹149.00.
December’s rise in power consumption underscores the impact of seasonal weather patterns on electricity demand. While consumption trends remain supportive for the sector, share price movements among power companies continue to be influenced by wider market factors and expectations around future demand growth.
