ITC Hotels witnessed muted trading activity after an early uptick, following a sizeable block transaction in which roughly 18.75 crore shares changed hands.
The deal, valued at around ₹3,856 crore, saw the shares sold at ₹205.65 each.
News reports suggest British American Tobacco may have offloaded the stake as part of a broader effort to reduce debt and streamline its portfolio.
The stock opened with mild gains but soon saw profit-booking as the market reacted to a substantial block deal executed in the early window.
Approximately 9% of the company’s equity, or 18.75 crore shares, were traded at ₹205.65 per share. The estimated transaction value stood at ₹3,856 crore, signalling considerable interest from institutional participants.
According to reports, British American Tobacco (BAT) is understood to be the seller in this transaction.
A Reuters report published the previous day indicated BAT’s intention to divest a portion of its holding in ITC Hotels, aiming to reduce debt and exit a business that is not central to its long-term strategy.
BAT is the second-largest shareholder in ITC Hotels. The company inherited this stake through its shareholding in ITC Ltd, which earlier in the year completed the demerger of its hotel division.
The reshuffling of assets has since allowed legacy investors to reassess their involvement in the standalone hospitality business.
At 10:00 AM, ITC Ltd shares the parent company from which ITC Hotels was spun off were trading marginally lower at ₹402.30, down ₹0.75 or 0.19%.

The significant block transaction in ITC Hotels generated short-term fluctuations but did not lead to pronounced volatility. With BAT reportedly adjusting its portfolio and freeing capital, the development reflects strategic realignment rather than operational concerns for the company. Market participants will continue to observe future ownership changes and their influence on the stock’s behaviour.
