As per The Economic Times report, Bharti Airtel and Tata Group telecom firms are planning a joint approach to the government requesting adjusted gross revenue (AGR) relief, following the extension provided to Vodafone Idea.
These companies are seeking equal treatment in repayment terms, which could impact their upcoming liabilities.
Bharti Airtel and Tata Group’s Tata Teleservices and Tata Teleservices Maharashtra are expected to jointly approach the government for relief on their AGR dues. This move comes after Vodafone Idea was granted a 10-year freeze on AGR payments worth ₹87,695 crore, extending repayment till 2035.
Executives from the companies indicated that legal options and collective requests are being explored to address what they consider a lack of uniform treatment across operators.
The companies have paused repayment pending government response. Airtel faces AGR dues of ₹48,103 crore, while the Tata units together owe ₹19,259 crore.
In September 2021, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) allowed telecom operators a 4-year moratorium on AGR dues, effective till FY25. During this period, companies were required to pay interest annually.
The repayments were scheduled to begin in FY26 in 6 annual instalments. The relief aimed at aiding the sector to stabilise operations and enhance infrastructure investment.

In November 2025, while reviewing Vodafone Idea's case, the Supreme Court chose not to interfere with government relief decisions. The court clarified that while companies could request relief, there is no legal entitlement to identical treatment.
The decision allows the Centre to frame policies tailored to maintain sectoral competition. Legal experts note that only cases involving financial distress or risk to the market are likely to qualify for government intervention.
Bharti Airtel has strengthened financially since the AGR verdict in 2019. The company has returned to profitability, garnered ₹55,300 crore in operating free cash flow in FY25, and has a 40% market share.
Despite having the capacity to clear its dues, Airtel is seeking fair treatment comparable to Vodafone Idea. Tata firms have yet to respond officially regarding the joint proposal.
The request by Bharti Airtel and Tata Group telecom units highlights growing concerns over uniformity in regulatory relief. With significant liabilities pending and repayments due soon, the companies await a consistent policy decision from the Centre.
