On June 25, 2025, SBI Mutual Fund acquired 1.6 crore shares of Star Health via block deals at an average price of ₹420 per share. The total investment amounts to ₹672 crore, translating into a 2.72% stake in the company. This is a significant entry, especially given that SBI Mutual Fund did not feature among the prominent shareholders in the March quarter shareholding disclosures.
As of March 31, 2025, mutual funds collectively held a 9.45% stake in Star Health. Leading positions were held by ICICI Prudential Pharma Healthcare Fund (4.8%) and HDFC Trustee Company Ltd. (3.97%). Despite being a favoured sector among institutions, SBI Mutual Fund had minimal to no holdings in the insurer during that period.
Prominent institutional investors in Star Health include ICICI Prudential Life Insurance with 4.7%, and global names like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Government Pension Fund Global, and WF Asian Reconnaissance Fund. The company was founded by the late Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, who remains a promoter with a 14.1% stake, while his wife Rekha Jhunjhunwala holds 3.04%. Safecrop Investments India LLP, another promoter entity, holds the largest stake at 40.29%.
