The Income Tax Department has issued a fresh warning to taxpayers against a surge in fake income tax refund emails and messages aimed at stealing personal and financial information.
According to the department, scammers are sending phishing emails that closely resemble official Income Tax refund communication, using similar logos, formats and subject lines to appear authentic. These look-alike income tax refund emails often prompt users to click suspicious links or submit sensitive details.
In its official advisory, the tax authority said these fraudulent refund emails typically contain minor spelling mistakes, fake website links and urgent refund claims. Clicking on these links can result in identity theft, bank fraud and misuse of PAN, Aadhaar and account details.
The department clarified that all genuine income tax refund updates are available only on the official portal. Taxpayers are advised not to click on refund links received via email, SMS or social media.
To prevent further misuse, taxpayers should report suspicious income tax refund emails immediately. The Income Tax Department has emphasised that quick reporting helps track and stop online tax scams, especially during the peak income tax filing and refund season, when phishing attempts tend to rise.

The department reiterated that it never asks for passwords, OTPs, bank details or Aadhaar information through emails, messages or unofficial links. Taxpayers have also been urged to follow only the department’s official website and verified social media handles for authentic income tax updates.
With cyber fraud cases rising, taxpayers are advised to stay alert and verify every refund-related message carefully before taking any action.
