Linking PAN with Aadhaar has become compulsory under India’s income tax framework. Failure to comply can result in your Permanent Account Number (PAN) being declared inoperative, which may disrupt income tax filings, delay refunds, and restrict various financial transactions.

In a recent directive, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has issued specific instructions for individuals who were allotted a PAN using an Aadhaar enrolment ID instead of the final Aadhaar number. Such taxpayers must complete the PAN–Aadhaar linkage by December 31, 2025. Missing this deadline could render the PAN inoperative from January 1, 2026, leading to significant compliance and transactional hurdles.

How to Link PAN with Aadhaar Online?

The Income Tax Department offers a straightforward online process to complete the linkage:

  1. Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal.
  2. Click on “Link Aadhaar” under the Quick Links section (login not required).
  3. Enter your PAN, Aadhaar number, and name exactly as per Aadhaar, then click Validate.
  4. An OTP will be sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number—enter the OTP to proceed.
  5. If you are linking after the prescribed deadline, pay a ₹1,000 late fee through e-Pay Tax, selecting the minor head “₹500 Fee for delay in linking PAN with Aadhaar” (as applicable).
  6. Submit the request after completing the payment.
  7. A confirmation message will appear on the screen.

The linkage status is typically updated on the portal within 3–5 working days. Users can subsequently verify the PAN–Aadhaar link status online to ensure successful completion.

PAN–Aadhaar Link: Deadlines and Latest Updates

The original deadline to link PAN with Aadhaar was June 30, 2023, which was later extended to May 31, 2024, with a late fee of ₹1,000 for delayed compliance.

However, through a notification dated April 3, 2025, the CBDT has provided a targeted extension for individuals who obtained a PAN using an Aadhaar enrolment ID. These taxpayers are now required to complete the linkage using their actual Aadhaar number by December 31, 2025.

Important Points to Remember

  • Ensure that your Aadhaar details are accurate and up to date, particularly your mobile number, as OTP-based authentication is mandatory.
  • An inoperative PAN can affect tax returns, refunds, bank transactions, and compliance with financial institutions.
