The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced changes to lounge access benefits for RuPay debit cards, which will come into effect from April 1. The update will significantly alter how certain RuPay cardholders can access airport and railway lounges in India.
According to a circular issued to member banks, complimentary lounge access on RuPay Platinum debit cards will be discontinued from the specified date.
Under the revised rules, holders of RuPay Platinum debit cards will no longer receive complimentary entry to domestic and international airport lounges or railway lounges starting April 1. This marks a shift from the earlier benefit structure where Platinum cardholders could access select lounges without meeting spending conditions.
The change is expected to impact a large number of debit card users who relied on these benefits during air and rail travel.
While complimentary access will end for Platinum cards, some RuPay debit card variants such as RuPay Select may continue to offer lounge access. However, the eligibility will follow a spend-based model.
Under this system, access to lounges will depend on the cardholder’s spending in the previous quarter. The eligibility will be managed through NPCI’s Benefit Management System, which tracks spending activity and determines qualification for lounge access benefits.
Several banks have already begun notifying customers about the upcoming changes. Institutions such as Punjab National Bank and ESAF Small Finance Bank have informed cardholders that complimentary lounge access on RuPay Platinum debit cards will be discontinued from April 1.
Some banks have also indicated that spend-based lounge access may continue for premium variants like RuPay Select cards, depending on individual bank policies.

The revision in lounge access rules reflects NPCI’s move towards a spend-based benefits model for RuPay debit cards. Cardholders who previously relied on complimentary access through Platinum cards may need to review their card benefits or spending requirements before planning travel. Going forward, eligibility for lounge access is likely to depend more on card usage patterns and the policies set by issuing banks.
