Last Date to Opt for Unified Pension Scheme Approaches: NPS Subscribers Can Submit Requests to Nodal Officers till Nov 30

The deadline to opt for the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), introduced for Central Government employees under the National Pension System (NPS), is nearing. The Ministry of Finance has reminded eligible individuals to exercise their option before November 30, 2025, to avoid missing out on select scheme benefits.
Deadline for Exercising UPS Option: November 30, 2025
The Ministry of Finance notified the UPS through Gazette Notification F. No. FX-1/3/2024-PR on January 24, 2025. As per the press release posted on November 25, 2025, eligible Central Government employees and past retirees who are under NPS can opt for UPS until November 30, 2025.
Applications can be submitted through the Central Recordkeeping Agency (CRA) system online or as a physical form to respective Nodal Offices. These offices will process the requests as per the designated procedures.
Key Features and Benefits of the Unified Pension Scheme
UPS offers several benefits including tax exemptions and provisions on resignation and compulsory retirement. One notable feature is the switch option, through which employees can switch back to NPS later if they wish. This dual flexibility provides greater control and security over retirement planning for subscribers.
Application Modes and Submission Process
Applicants have 2 options: either apply online via the CRA system or follow the offline route by submitting a completed form to their Nodal Officer. It is imperative that applications are submitted on or before the cut-off date of November 30, 2025, to ensure timely consideration under the scheme’s provisions.

Eligibility and Scope
The scheme is intended for Central Government employees and past retirees currently covered under NPS. Through UPS, subscribers gain additional advantages compared to NPS alone. It reflects the government’s efforts to offer more comprehensive retirement solutions for public sector personnel.
Conclusion
With the deadline of November 30, 2025, fast approaching, eligible NPS subscribers must act promptly to take advantage of the Unified Pension Scheme. The online and offline submission mechanisms offer flexibility in application, while the scheme provides a broad range of retirement benefits with the option to reverse the switch if desired in future.
