The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced a 1-day extension to the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing deadline for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26. Taxpayers now have until September 16, 2025, to complete their filings following technical disruptions reported on September 15, 2025.
In response to technical glitches that impacted the online filing process on September 15, 2025, the CBDT provided a last-minute extension to support taxpayers. The updated deadline of September 16, 2025, gives individuals and businesses an additional day to complete their returns for AY 2025-26. This follows a prior due date extension from July 31 to September 15.
According to a late-night social media update from the Income Tax Department, more than 7 crore ITRs have already been successfully filed for AY 2025-26. The department thanked taxpayers for their responses and encouraged the remaining individuals to make use of this additional day to avoid last-minute bottlenecks.
The initial deadline for ITR submissions was set for July 31, 2025. Due to various disruptions in the filing process, the date was first extended by 46 days till September 15, 2025. This new extension makes the final date September 16, 2025. The move is aimed at easing compliance pressure and ensuring smooth digital processing through the income tax portal.

As this extension marks the final opportunity to file without incurring penalties, taxpayers should ensure all information is accurately reported and submitted within the deadline. The Income Tax Department portal has also updated its system functionality to address previous issues and improve user experience for the final day of filing.
With the ITR deadline extended to September 16, 2025 due to technical hurdles, taxpayers receive critical relief. Over 7 crore filings have already been recorded, and the tax department continues to optimise services to support compliance with minimal delays.
