EPFO has eased EDLI rules, allowing job gaps up to 60 days and ignoring weekends or holidays, ensuring families receive a minimum insurance cover of ₹50,000.

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has changed the rules under the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) scheme. Now, short job gaps of up to 60 days, weekends, and public holidays will not be treated as a break in service while deciding insurance eligibility.

Why Was This Change Needed?

Earlier, many EDLI death claims were rejected or paid at a lower amount because authorities counted weekends or holidays between two jobs as a service break. This caused families to lose insurance benefits even when the employee was actively working.

For example, if an employee resigned on a Friday and joined a new job on Monday, the weekend was counted as a break, making the family ineligible for EDLI benefits.

What Has Changed Now?

EPFO has clarified that the following will not be considered a break in service:

  • Saturdays, Sundays, and weekly offs between two jobs
  • National, state, gazetted, and restricted holidays
  • Job changes with gaps of up to 60 days, if the employee worked in EPF-covered companies

These gaps will now be treated as continuous service.

Minimum EDLI Payout Increased

EPFO has confirmed that dependents or legal heirs will receive a minimum EDLI insurance payout of ₹50,000, even if:

  • The employee did not complete 12 months of service
  • The average PF balance was below ₹50,000

Who Is Eligible for the Benefit?

The minimum EDLI amount of ₹50,000 will be paid if:

  • The employee’s death occurs within 6 months of the last PF contribution
  • The employee was still on the employer’s rolls

Conclusion

This EPFO rule change offers stronger financial security to salaried employees and their families. By ignoring short job gaps and holidays, EPFO has ensured that technical issues no longer deprive dependents of the ₹50,000 EDLI insurance cover, especially for employees who switch jobs frequently.
