In a move aimed at improving account accuracy, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended the facility for employees to de-link incorrect Member IDs (MIDs) from their Universal Account Number (UAN).
The update is particularly relevant for members who discovered duplicate or incorrect MIDs created without their knowledge. The extension now allows de-linking even when contributions exist in such accounts, subject to certain conditions. Finally, a bureaucratic process that admits mistakes happen. Progress.
EPFO has clearly defined eligibility criteria to prevent misuse of the facility. Members can request de-linking if the MID was incorrectly created and has limited contribution history.
However, the following cases are not eligible:
For accounts with contributions up to two times, employers can directly approve the request. If contributions fall between two to six instances, the request is escalated to EPFO’s regional office for further review and approval.
The process has been streamlined through the EPFO member portal:
If the employer does not respond within two weeks or rejects the request, the matter is escalated to EPFO authorities for final decision-making.
EPFO has indicated that separate guidelines will be issued regarding the treatment of funds in de-linked accounts. These balances may be transferred to a Suspense Reserve Fund (SRF), though detailed procedures are awaited.

The extension of the MID de-linking facility marks a practical step by EPFO to address long-standing issues around duplicate or incorrect accounts. For employees, it offers greater control and transparency over their EPF records.
While the process still involves multiple layers of approval, the ability to correct errors, even in accounts with contributions, is a meaningful improvement in India’s retirement savings framework.
