Amid growing confusion over reports that LPG biometric Aadhaar authentication has been made mandatory, the Centre has clarified that not all consumers need to complete eKYC. The move comes as India faces an LPG supply crunch due to disruptions caused by the ongoing West Asia conflict, which has also triggered concerns around hoarding and black marketing.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has made it clear that LPG eKYC is required only for “unauthenticated” users, aka those who have not yet completed Aadhaar verification.
If you are a regular LPG consumer and have already completed eKYC earlier, there is no need to do it again.
For Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries, KYC needs to be updated just once every financial year, and only for receiving subsidies after the seventh refill.
The renewed push for Aadhaar authentication comes at a time when LPG supplies are under pressure due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Commercial LPG supply for businesses has been capped at 20% of their average monthly consumption, as the government prioritises domestic household needs.
eKYC helps identify genuine users, prevent misuse of subsidies, and curb diversion of LPG cylinders. These issues tend to exacerbate during shortages.
The government has made the process simple and free, allowing users to complete it from home.
Consumers can log in to their LPG provider apps (IndianOil One, Hello BPCL, or HP Pay) and select the Aadhaar eKYC option. The process involves a live face scan using the Aadhaar FaceRD app and is usually approved within 24–48 hours.
Alternatively, users can visit the My LPG portal, choose their provider, and complete authentication via OTP or biometric verification.

While headlines may suggest a blanket mandate, the reality is far more limited. LPG eKYC is not required for all consumers; only those who have not yet verified their Aadhaar details. For most users, there is no immediate action needed, even as the government tightens checks amid ongoing supply disruptions.
